Guanabana Smoothie – Chef Remy Cooks!

Guanabana is a fruit from the Islands but it does grow in South Florida. Pronounced “Gua-na-ba-na”, it is a shaped like a mango with small soft spikes and is white on the inside. It tastes something like a pear and makes a wonderful smoothie. Ask your grocer if he can get the Goya Brand frozen packets. All Latin American restaurants in Miami, New York City, and Chicago will readily make this smoothie for you. In fact, most other fruit smoothies such as Banana, Papaya, Mango, and Guava are a big favorite in such restaurants. Honey is a better substitute for sugar in this recipe if you have it. A scoop of vanilla ice cream is added sometimes but not necessary since the smoothie is already thick and very filling. INGREDIENTS: 7 oz. frozen Guanabana 4 Tbsp. granulated sugar 2 cup whole milk 1 cup ice cubes Method: In a blender bowl, first add two cups of whole milk followed by sugar or honey. Break off frozen Guanabana pieces from a frozen packet to equal 7 ounces. This should be half of the 14 oz. packet of Goya Brand frozen Guanabana Pulp. Last, add one cup of ice cubes so that ice is on top away from blender blades. Run the blender continuously at medium speed for three minutes or until sugar is completely dissolved. Serves two or three. Be careful, it is very cold.
